Winter Walk Day at Holy Family Catholic School
On January 19, members of the Indigenous Education team joined community partner Beedahbin Peltier, to participate in a school-wide Winter Walk Day at Holy Family Catholic School in Beaverton.
Students in Kindergarten and Grade 1 took part in an outdoor story walk around the school grounds, related to the book Be a Good Ancestor by Gabrielle Prince and Leona Prince. Students explored each page of the story and responded with enthusiastic movements, comments and questions.
Beedahbin also led students in Grade 2-8 on walks into the forest beside the school, as he shared his traditional knowledge about what lives and grows in that area. He discussed how the Anishinaabe have not just sustained biodiversity, but have always recognized the importance that their interactions with the environment are a purposeful role in the continuation of creation.
After hearing Beedahdin share how he thought about his life goals and changed them over time, Chloe, a Grade 6 student, said “it made me think about what goals I want to have.”
